Wunsiedel solar park

The Wunsiedel solar park is a 37 MWp project covering an area of around 25 hectares and was completed on schedule in April 2024. The plant generates around 38,584 MWh of renewable energy per year, supplies around 9,500 households and reduces regional CO₂ emissions by around 15,000 tons per year.
A special feature of the project is the combination of south and east-west orientation in four sub-fields – a concept that makes optimum use of the diurnal cycle of solar radiation and enables a more even feed-in.

Initial situation & objectives

The project aims to ensure both high yields and grid stability. The site on the outskirts of Wunsiedel offers sufficient space and an ideal profile to combine different orientations and thus achieve constant yields throughout the day.

Location & system layout

The solar park is divided into four sub-fields, which are arranged to allow both south and east-west orientation. This concept leads to a broader production of electricity throughout the day, which supports grid quality, particularly locally, and reduces peak loads.

Technical implementation & construction

The facility was built in stages from September 2023. The modular alignment in four sections enabled parallel construction processes, which meant that the park could be completed early in April 2024 despite the winter construction period.
Quality assurance, safety management and technical approvals ran permanently in parallel with assembly and cabling, so that transitions between the construction phases ran smoothly.

Result & added value

The Wunsiedel solar park delivers reliable energy yields throughout the day, improves grid stability and makes a noticeable contribution to regional CO₂ reduction.
Benefits at a glance:

  • ~ 38,584 MWh of climate-friendly electricity per year
  • Supply of ~ 9,500 households
  • ~ 15,000 t CO₂ reduction annually
  • Efficient daily cycle through combined alignments
  • On-schedule completion despite winter construction phase
  • important role for the regional energy transition in Wunsiedel and Upper Franconia
