The solar developer Sunrock inaugurated the Maasvlakte solar project, one of the largest solar roof systems in Europe. The project with an output of 25 MWp is a remarkable step in the field of renewable energies.
The Maasvlakte plant is located on the 210,000 square meter PATRIZIA Maasvlakte logistics site in the Rotterdam port area. The 120,000 m² photovoltaic plant has a capacity of 25 MWp and will produce clean energy for around 8,000 households.
“The size of the Maasvlakte solar project and its unique location make it an exciting venture for GOLDBECK SOLAR,” says Michiel Vanhoutte, COO of GOLDBECK SOLAR. “Maasvlakte is located on the edge of the sea, a very exposed location with enormous wind forces. This made the installation quite complex and challenging.” As the implementation was to take place while the Smartlog logistics center was in operation, the engineering teams organized a construction and installation process that would cause minimal disruption to the tenants without affecting the schedule. With more than 20 years of experience, GOLDBECK SOLAR is once again positioning itself as a gateway to solar energy with this project.
The Maasvlakte solar plant contributes to the Netherlands’ commitment to the EU Green Deal and is expected to generate up to 14,845 tons of CO2 saved. This achievement highlights the project’s role as a catalyst on the Netherlands’ path to climate neutrality by 2050. In addition, Maasvlakte accounts for almost half of PATRIZIA’s total solar power capacity in its logistics real estate portfolio, underscoring the company’s sustainability goals
Given the limited amount of land available for photovoltaic projects in the Netherlands, rooftop PV systems are a key factor in the energy transition.
“We are rapidly expanding into Europe and developing rooftop PV projects with our real estate partners,” explains Johannes Duijzer, CEO of Sunrock. “We bring the know-how from the Dutch market and are gaining traction in Germany, France, Belgium and the UK. Solar energy is the cheapest and most reliable form of energy that is driving the transition to a clean energy future.”
The successful integration of the Maasvlakte solar project represents an important milestone in GOLDBECK SOLAR’s commitment to its Dutch customers and demonstrates GOLDBECK SOLAR’s ongoing commitment to the successful implementation of renewable energy initiatives in the region.
Sunrock is unstoppable. We work with European companies, organizations and governments on a tailor-made energy strategy and we are number one in large-scale solar projects. From solar systems to smart batteries and from asset management to clear dashboards. Sunrock takes care of everything: feasibility studies, subsidy applications, financing and insurance. From the operation and management of solar parks to the utilization of the clean energy generated there.
Sunrock was founded in the Netherlands in 2012 as a start-up in the field of solar energy for logistics properties. Since 2020, Sunrock has been part of COFRA Holding and has grown to more than 120 employees in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. Sunrock has realized 500 MWP of solar energy and has another 2GWp in development. With a clear commitment to our ESG criteria, we have a clear mission: to walk the path to a clean energy future together with our customers.
