Solar power for 6,400 households – RheinEnergie commissions new solar park in Hemau

RheinEnergie has set itself the goal of gradually making its entire water, electricity and heat supply
climate-neutral by 2035
. In pursuit of this goal, the Cologne-based
energy supplier has been continuously expanding its own renewable
energy portfolio for many years. To this end, RheinEnergie is developing
and constructing primarily photovoltaic
and wind energy plants throughout Germany.
Now RheinEnergie Solar,
a wholly owned subsidiary of RheinEnergie AG, has commissioned the largest photovoltaic plant in the company’s history to date at
.

The solar park located in Hemau, Bavaria, covers an area of almost 20 soccer pitches. It has an output of around 19 megawatts (MW) and supplies enough electricity to power around 6,400 households for a year. The construction work took place in the winter half-year 2021/2022. Ulrich Bemmann, Managing Director
of RheinEnergie Solar and Head of Renewable Energies at RheinEnergie, ceremoniously commissioned the new solar park together with the First Mayor of the town of Hemau, Herbert Tischhöfer, Sebastian Kögel, Sales Engineer at GOLDBECK SOLAR.

Successful participation in innovation tender

For RheinEnergie, the new solar park marks the first successful participation in an innovation tender under the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). RheinEnergie receives a fixed market premium for a
portion of the electricity fed into the grid instead of a sliding market premium. This allows RheinEnergie to market the electricity under competitive
conditions. “The solar park in Hemau is a milestone for us in the expansion of renewable energies. With its installed capacity of almost 19 megawatts, it will significantly increase our existing photovoltaic
portfolio in one fell swoop.

The amount of electricity generated each year is enough to supply the entire town of Hemau with electricity. In this way, we are not only ensuring more solar power in the grid, but also making our contribution to the independence of the energy supply in
Germany,” says Ulrich Bemmann (RheinEnergie). Herbert Tischhöfer(City of Hemau) says: “Hemau has been a solar location since 2003 and is known as a solar city. We are very pleased about the new solar park in our community. Renewable energies – above all solar energy – are the best way to stop the climate crisis. I am very proud that we
are leading by example here in Hemau and setting an example.” Sebastian Kögel says: “We are delighted to be handing over another great project to RheinEnergie today. Despite the current volatile and turbulent market, we were able to complete the project on time in close coordination with our suppliers and RheinEnergie.” Including the new solar park, RheinEnergie operates 28 photovoltaic systems on open and roof areas across Germany with an installed capacity of around 58 megawatts
(MW) and 26 wind parks with a total of 107 systems and a proportionate installed capacity of more than 172 MW. The amount of electricity generated each year is enough to supply
around 113,000 households.
