WEMAG and the Evangelical Church in Württemberg invest in EEG power plant: the Zietlitz solar park. Minister President Manuela Schwesig emphasizes the importance of renewable energies for the future.
After around ten months of construction, the solar park in the district of Zietlitz in the municipality of Dobbin-Linstow (district of Rostock) has been connected to the grid. It is currently the largest tendered project in the solar sector in Germany that is subsidized under the Renewable Energy Sources Act. The guests at the technical commissioning of the solar park included the Minister President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. “In the coming years, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will also face the challenge of becoming more climate-neutral. At the same time, especially after the coronavirus crisis, we need economic growth, good jobs and social balance. Renewable energies are one area in which we can work together to advance the economy, the environment and social issues. Clean energy, produced in our country, with good jobs, for clean industry in our country, also with good jobs. The Zietlitz solar park is a big step in this direction,” said Manuela Schwesig.
“As a modern green energy supplier, we not only network renewable energy plants in the region, but also build our own power plants. The Zietlitz solar park is the largest photovoltaic project to date that WEMAG has built together with partners,” said WEMAG CEO Thomas Murche. The plant is characterized by high-quality components, a high-performance IT infrastructure and a sophisticated security concept. “Access no longer works with a conventional key, but digitally and the PV system is monitored via satellite communication,” explained Thomas Murche.
The photovoltaic system is located on the site of the former open-cast gravel mine. The approximately 200,000 PV modules have been installed on a total area of around 86 hectares. This is roughly the size of 140 soccer pitches. The park has a nominal output of 80 megawatts peak. The annual electricity output of around 74,000 megawatt hours is enough to supply up to 18,500 four-person households with solar power each year. In addition, around 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide are avoided.
“Zietlitz is a very good example of the necessary transformation towards a climate-neutral future. It is the responsibility of all of us to pave the way for the expansion of renewable energies. Together. Now,” explained Joachim Goldbeck, Managing Director of Goldbeck Solar GmbH and President of the German Solar Industry Association. In addition to WEMAG, the Evangelical Church in Württemberg is one of the investors in the solar park. “With this flagship project, we are further expanding our investment portfolio in renewable energies and our active contribution to climate protection. This is in line with our ecclesiastical goal of preserving creation – and at the same time enables us to secure the pensions of our employees. We are pleased about the cooperation with WEMAG, which, like the regional church, thinks long-term and is sustainably oriented,” explained Dr. Martin Kastrup, Chief Church Councillor and Head of Finance of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg.
